Collective identity and representing ourselves: blog tasks
Complete the following tasks on your blog:
1) Read the article and summarise each section in one sentence, starting with the section 'Who are you?'
Advertising and Marketing: This created a new wave of ideaology, as now the media has begun to tell what people needed and wanted which revolutionalised how consumer goods were made.
Fashion, hair, and makeup have all been made increasingly important as the media puts a pressure on image.
This is due to during the later 20th century, people began having a stronger sense of self and felt the need to express themselves
2) Do you agree with the view that modern media is all about 'style over substance'? What does this expression mean?
I resonate strongly with this statement, as I believe most people today to things purely to boost their own image. An example of this is on social media, people post things that they beleive will postively improve their image.
3) Explain Baudrillard's theory of 'media saturation' in one paragraph. You may need to research it online to find out more.
Baudrillard theory of media saturation says that society is overflowed with a constant flow of media messages, leading to a disconnected state between reality and how reality is represented. He argues as media content grows in size, it replaces authentic experiences with simulations of said experiences which creates a hyper reality where what is "real" becomes interchangeable from images and representations produced by media, making us unable to discern truth from the illusion of it
4) Is your presence on social media an accurate reflection of who you are? Have you ever added or removed a picture from a social media site purely because of what it says about the type of person you are?
No
5) What is your opinion on 'data mining'? Are you happy for companies to sell you products based on your social media presence and online search terms? Is this an invasion of privacy?
I understand why "data-mining" is important but I agree with the notion that it is an invasion of privacy.
