Media Paper 2 mock exam - learner response

Media Paper 2 mock exam - learner response

This is the second of your vital learner response tasks following the full set of A Level Media mock exams.

Remember, the most important aspect of any mock exam is making mistakes and learning from them. With Paper 2 this is even more significant as it contains the synoptic element  in question 4 and extended essays on in-depth topics throughout.

Here, we need to closely analyse out performance in Paper 2 and identify specific ways we will improve for the real exam on Thursday 5 June (PM). Complete the following learner response tasks in a new blogpost on your Media Exam blog called 'Paper 2 mock exam learner response'.

Paper 2 mock exam: learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).

Abdiillah, a very strong performance for this mock exam. Well done! Your Q2 essay on video games and post feminism was  very good. See indicative content on mark scheme, examiner report on how you could improve

For Q3 on magazines (GQ) ensure you include the csp pages we have covered.

2) Did you succeed in meeting or exceeding your target grade for A-Level Media in this paper? If not, how many additional marks do you need to achieve your target grade in Paper 2?
Yes

These are the grade boundaries we've used (out of 84):

A* = 71; A = 62, B = 52; C = 43; D = 33; E = 24

Now read through the real AQA mark scheme for Paper 2 and the examiner's report (see your Media teacher's Google Classroom for both of these documents).

Q1:
I described the poster clearly but did not fully apply narratology in a detailed way. I needed to mention an enigmas and stereotypes as i had forgotten and did not analyse how narrative conflict and character types combine to construct meaning.

Q2:
I explained post feminism but focused more on describing Horizon Forbidden West and The Sims FreePlay than evaluating the validity of the theory.

Q3:
I explained how social context affects GQ and The Gentlewoman but did not fully analyse audience response using theory such as Hall’s reception theory or cultivation theory.

Q4:

I covered audience and some industry points but did not fully integrate language and representation.

4)

Introduction
Define interactivity as audience participation through comments, sharing, user generated content and feedback. Define success as audience reach, brand identity, profit and cultural impact. Judgement that interactivity is important but not the only factor in success.

Paragraph 1:
The online form encourages participatory culture and blurs producer and audience boundaries. Taylor Swift’s social media constructs intimacy through direct address, personal imagery and identity themes which encourage fan engagement and self representation. The Voice website allows comments and community participation which supports Hall’s idea of negotiated readings and active audiences.

Paragraph 2:
Taylor Swift operates within conglomerate owned platforms which limit true interactivity because branding is tightly controlled. The Voice has financial difficulties which show that interactivity alone does not guarantee economic success. Convergence and digital distribution increase reach but ownership and control shape how much freedom audiences really have.

5) Based on the whole Paper 2 Learner response, plan five topics / concepts / CSPs / theories that you will prioritise in your Easter Media revision timetable.

Post modernism
Post feminism
Taylor swift
