1) Feedback
WWW: Showed secure understanding on theory, for example in representation and industry. specific terminology used and Csp knowledge was good
Ebi: My analysis is not evaluative enough and must be explicitly analaltical. For my extended questions I should have sustained a clearer line of arguement.
2) Question by question analysis simplified
Q1
Clear understanding of anchorage and how the slogan guides meaning. However, analysis focused mainly on obvious ideas of beauty and escape. More depth was needed on the ideological meanings of National Trust and Time well spent. Semiotics and Barthes should have been referenced more directly, especially anchorage as a fixing function. Ideas about conservatism, heritage and ownership were missing.
Q2:
Strong explanation of the political context of Ghost Town, especially Thatcherism and urban decline. Discussion of the National Trust advert was less detailed. The myth of timeless rural England and the idea of ideological neutrality needed more development. More use of terms like ideology, stereotyping and realism would improve this.
Q3:
Good identification of intertextual references and hybridity in Old Town Road. However, the to what extent part was not fully addressed. A clearer judgement was needed on whether meaning depends on intertextual knowledge. Hall’s encoding and decoding model could have strengthened the answer.
Q4:
Sound understanding of Butler’s theory and good application to Sephora. Evaluation lacked depth. Score was described as sexist but not fully debated in relation to subversion.
Q5:
Definitions were mostly correct but not precise enough. Digital natives needed clearer reference to being born into the digital age.
Q6:
Clear bad knowledge of Newsbeat’s target audience and tone. However, Gerbner and resonance were not clearly linked to cultivation theory. Stronger integration of theory was needed.
Q7:
Balanced argument about risk and profit in Blinded by the Light. Good discussion of co production and synergy. Evaluation was not always fully developed. More direct reference to Hesmondhalgh and a sharper final judgement were needed.
4) Five priorities for summer revision
1 Butler and gender performativity
2 Intertextuality in Old Town Road
3 Media industries, risk and Hesmondhalgh with Blinded by the Light
4 Representation of place in Ghost Town and the National Trust advert
5 Audience theory including Hall, Gerbner, digital natives
