Read Media Factsheet 76: News Values and complete the following questions/tasks.

1) What example news story does the Factsheet use to illustrate Galtung and Ruge's News Values? Why is it an appropriate example of a news story likely to gain prominent coverage?
The factsheet uses the death of a British servicewoman in Afghanistan. it has shock and death of a british national, intensity and recency due to the ongoing war. The story is clear, emotional and relevant to a UK audience, which increases its news value.
2) What is gatekeeping?
Gatekeeping is the process of filtering information before it reaches the audience. Editors and journalists decide which stories are selected and which are rejected.
3) What are the six ways bias can be created in news?
Bias can be created through selection and omission, placement, headlines, photos and captions, use of names and titles, and choice of words. Each method influences how audiences interpret the story. Together they shape the overall meaning and tone of the news.
4) How have online sources such as Twitter, bloggers or Wikileaks changed the way news is selected and published?
Online sources allow audiences to share information quickly and sometimes break stories before mainstream media. This challenges traditional gatekeeping because journalists often use social media as a source, However professional news organisations still decide which online information becomes widely published.
5) In your opinion, how has the digital age changed Galtung and Ruge’s news values?
The digital ag has increased the importance of speed and immediacy. Stories that trend online or go viral now gain attention quickly and audience engagement and shareability have become key factors in determining news value.
6) How would you update these news values for the digital age? Choose TWO of Galtung and Ruge's news values and say how they have been affected by the growth of digital technology.
Time span has changed because news is now expected instantly through live updates and notifications. This pressures journalists to publish quickly, sometimes before full authenticitation or double checking of thje story.
