OSP: Assessment learner response

Your Online, Social and Participatory media assessment was a great opportunity to test yourself on two key aspects of Media Paper Two - an unseen question and a 25-mark synoptic style essay.

The first part of your learner response is to look carefully at your mark and grade and comments from your teacher. If anything doesn't make sense, ask your teacher - it's crucial we're learning from the process of assessments and feedback as we move towards your mocks and exams at the end of this year. The second focuses on using the mark scheme as a learning resource and developing our skills in essay planning and structuring.

Your learner response is as follows:

Create a new blog post on your Media 1 Exam blog called 'OSP assessment learner response' and complete the following tasks:
1. Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

Abdiillah, a very strong Q2 response-you demonstrate good understanding and knowledge of convergence and its impact on production, distribution cosumption. Your essay is well structured and logical.

Q1- not enough detailed textual analysis of specific focus on myth revise this.

Q2- Some attempt at drawing on other CsPs for Q2, but it's still not enough. more specific links need to be made based on Q focus.

2. Read the whole mark scheme for this assessment carefully (posted on your Google Classroom). Identify three specific aspects from Figure 1 (the Bioshock Infinite game cover) that you could have mentioned in your answer (e.g. selection of images, colour scheme, text etc).

Denotation
• The cover shows Booker DeWitt, the male protagonist, in a three-quarter pose. He’s holding
a gun (slung over his shoulder), with a serious or determined expression.
• Behind him is a burning American flag, with flames visible in the red and white stripes.
• In the background, there is the sky (bright, somewhat clouded) and a zeppelin / airship,
hinting at the city in the sky.
• The game’s title BioShock Infinite appears prominently, using the franchise’s trademark font.
• On a literal level, the cover establishes the game’s main character, suggests action (gun), and
hints at an American-themed setting with political or historical overtones (flag), plus a
fantastical or alternate world (zeppelin).

Connotation
Here we go beyond the literal image to what it suggests culturally or symbolically:
• Booker’s gun and posture connote strength, readiness for conflict, and traditional masculine
heroism. He’s not a passive figure — he seems to be someone who must fight, defend, or
take action.
• Burning American flag: This is very symbolic. It connotes patriotism, but the fact it's burning
suggests conflict, rebellion, or a critique of the American ideology. It signals that the game
may deal with political tension, perhaps pointing to corruption, decay, or the darker side of
nationalism.

Myth
At the myth level, we consider what broader cultural values or ideologies are being reinforced or
questioned through this cover.
• Myth of American exceptionalism: The burning flag mythologizes America itself — not as
purely heroic, but as deeply flawed, possibly self-destructive. It evokes ideas about national
identity, pride, and the cost of that pride.

3. Now use the mark scheme to identify three potential points that you could have made in your essay for Question 2 (Jenkins - participatory culture or Curran and Seaton's - concentration of ownership).

Industries
• the impact of digitally convergent media platforms on media production, distribution and
circulation

Audiences
• how media producers target, attract, reach, address and potentially construct audiences
• how media producers target, attract, reach, address and potentially construct audiences
• how media industries target audiences through the content and appeal of media products
and through the ways in which they are marketed, distributed and circulated

4. Write down two other CSPs from across the course that you could have referenced in your essay which link to digital convergence in relation to production, distribution and consumption and how they have impacted their products.

SEPHORA BLACK IS BEAUTY+ SCORE HAIR CREAM

5. Use your exam response, the mark scheme and any other resources you wish to use to write a detailed essay plan for Question 2. Make sure you are planning at least three well-developed paragraphs in addition to an introduction (thesis statement) and conclusion.

Introduction: Set up debate, name csps, TS, Sephora as supplementary, Score as supplementary, and The voice.

Paragraph 1: Ts. Point evidence explain link evaluation

P2: Sephhora as initial evaluation, then Score as testament.

P3: The voice

Conclusion

6. Finally, identify three key areas you plan to revise from the OSP unit before the January mock exams (e.g. CSP elements of media theories) having looked at your feedback from this assessment.

I definitely should revise some The Voice as I was a bit lost for words when planning!
